Following a successful funding bid, Chesterfield Borough Council appointed us to help rejuvenate Staveley town centre through the ‘Staveley 21’ programme. Building on a partnership spanning more than a decade, we were tasked with shaping both the masterplan and detailed proposals for a new landmark building at its heart.
Staveley has strong roots and a proud identity, yet like many town centres it faces changing retail patterns and fragmented public space. The ambition was clear: create a safer, more welcoming and commercially resilient centre that reconnects the High Street, Market Square and canal, while setting a long-term vision for growth.
The masterplan grew from engagement. We worked closely with the Council, stakeholders and local voices to understand how people move through the town — where they meet, where connections feel weak, and where opportunity lies. This insight shaped a strategy that strengthens routes, improves accessibility and redefines the Market Square as a flexible civic space for events, markets and everyday activity.
At its centre sits a new Pavilion building, positioned between the Miners Welfare and the High Street as a gateway to the square. Designed to house the library alongside entrepreneurial and community uses, it creates a shared destination that supports learning, enterprise and connection.
Together, the masterplan and Pavilion establish a more active, inclusive and resilient town centre — rooted in Staveley’s heritage, yet confidently looking forward.
